10.30 Alan McAulay of the Scottish Building Standards Hub will talk to us about the establishment of this new initiative, discuss forthcoming regulatory changes, and take any questions we have.

10.30 Gary Gilruth of CEC Building Control, focus on Domestic Regs with recent and future changes and updates on personnel and department structure.
11:30am: Robert Campbell of RIAS Practice Services will present on ‘When things go wrong, they go badly wrong’. Drawing on a range of anonymised challenging real-life scenarios , Robert will draw lessons so that we can best avoid the same.

CPD: Nick Ribbons of Zero Waste Scotland will talk to us about the ‘Circular Economy in the design of Buildings’, with principles that can be employed and case study exemplars that have employed
The CPD will be followed by a brief tour of the Edinburgh Printmakers building, which was repurposed by Page & Park Architects.

The Annual UK Passivhaus Trust Conference is this year coming to Edinburgh. It is a chance for members to learn more about this way of building, aspects of which will inform future revisions to our building standards.

15.15 Radostina Stoeva & Scott Simpson CEO of Indi Nature will present on hemp insulation and other hemp based products by IndiNature.

Join us for the 2023 ECAN Awayday on Saturday 19th August.
We will visit the Beacon in Gorebridge by Lee Boyd Architects with an explanation of the project by Gail Halvorsen architect, and then the Peel Visitors Centre at Glentress by Gaia Architects, with an explanation of the project by Sam Foster, project Architect.
Using the RIBA climateframework.com model, specifically adapted for sole practitioners (by Glo Lo), learn about how we can collaborate, up-skill and collectively build capabilities. Underpinned by the vision + the mission of the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) for 2030, the Climate Framework presents a common curriculum structure organised around six overarching themes. These themes represent those areas, which can be influenced most directly by the built environment.
ECAN AGM and Management meeting will commence at 12.30 pm .
ECAN CPD on Fire issues will follow at 2.00pm.
Sam Clucas, a Fire Safety Engineer with Arup Associates will talk about the general principles of fire safety, implications of new legislation, and focus on issues that are particularly relevant to smaller practices including sprinkler systems, cladding for domestic projects, including timber cladding.
Danny Henderson & Colin Wishart, City of Edinburgh Building Control explain key changes to the Technical Standards.
Discussions will include a short introduction into some common moisture issues in buildings, failures, basic building physics principles applied - when to start worrying and what to watch out for - and investigation into some common build-ups requested by members through WUFI modelling.

Away days are a chance for ECAN members to share experience and knowledge a step removed from regular work.
As we emerge from restrictions, this is a chance for us to get together and share our thoughts on what ECAN should be, while taking in the excellent up cycling of the Charteris buildings by Konishi Gaffney.
